Doom and gloom! Everywhere you look in the news, there’s a reason to worry. Yes, there’s some serious things going on in parts of the world that can affect everyone. But how much of what we read about is really doom and gloom?
Today, we’re talking about the hot button topics in the economy that you and your clients could be talking about - and whether it’s something you, or they, should be worried about.
Joining me to talk about the hot topics is a previous guest who deals with high net worth clients every single day, Simon Bowers.
Simon joined IPC in 2022 after a 20 year stint at a Investment Counseling firm where he was both Head of Retail Trading and a Vice-President & Portfolio Manager. Simon’s portfolio management responsibilities included both a High Net Worth SMA for client accounts as well as the firm’s largest fixed income fund. Before then he worked at an independent brokerage firm in trading & trade support and at one of Canada’s largest insurers supporting their demutualization.
Simon holds the Chartered Investment Manager (CIM) designation and is a Fellow of the Canadian Securities Institute (FSCI). He holds the Certified International Wealth Manager (CIWM) from the Association of International Wealth Management, as well as the Responsible Investment Advisor Certification (RIAC) from RI Canada, and the Certified Executor’s Advisor credential from CICEA.
What are you talking about with your clients? How are you handling these important topics and conversations with them? I’d love to hear your stories and chat over a virtual coffee! You can schedule a time with me at https://aspect.ipcc.ca/turning-the-page-podcast#grabcoffeewithchris

EP43 - How to Talk About Grief in Business and Life with Dina Bell-Laroche
Monday Nov 13, 2023
Monday Nov 13, 2023
When we start a business, there’s so much we must learn. Everything from creating the long-term vision to the day-to-day tasks needed to keep things running to how to interact with clients.
Yet one thing is still certain: we’re human. Life happens. A client, a coworker, even a partner could pass away. A tragedy can happen that throws a whole plan off and changes our life or the lives of our clients forever. I personally have had it happen to me on many occasions.
We might be trained on how to handle the business and financial side, but how do we handle the human side? How do we do professional work while dealing with our grief? How do we allow ourselves to be human?
Let’s talk about grief in our profession.
Here to share some insight into this important topic is Dina Bell-Laroche, who recently wrote a very special book that offers some much-needed understanding and guidance to those struggling with the loss of a colleague, client or trusted advisor.
Dina’s life changed dramatically in 2001 after the death of her youngest sister Tracy. Since then, her journey through grief has inspired her to advocate for greater grief and loss literacy. As a death educator, accredited professional coach, keynote speaker, and published author, Dina’s commitment to help the bereaved re-imagine a new relationship with loss is unwavering. She activates this through workshops, speaking engagements, Grief Cafés, her blogs, and her new book Grief Unleashed: Moving from the hole in our hearts to whole-hearted.
Throughout her extensive journey, she has discovered many gems that she is inspired to share with others including building classrooms in Nicaragua, and more recently in Northern Ontario on Treaty 3, in honour of her deceased sister. Her knowledge runs deep. Her teachings are wise. Her practical way of demystifying a taboo topic will leave you feeling more resourced and less isolated. Her hope is to foster greater grief and loss literacy and inspire people to become more compassionate and present to life’s blessings.

EP42 - The Importance of Philanthropy and Community Giving with Steve Fox
Monday Oct 30, 2023
Monday Oct 30, 2023
We’re very lucky people in Canada. We get to help amazing clients succeed with their financial goals while growing a successful business of our own, which gives us such a great, blessed life. But as Spiderman says, "With great power comes great responsibility.”
As we grow our business, it’s important to be responsible and give back to the community that we work in.
Philanthropy is very important to me and IPC. So much so that every November (up to the time of the pandemic), a team of staff and IPC Advisors make time to travel to Honduras to give back with our time, energy, and financial support to improve their living conditions and lives.
Today I want to talk about how business professionals can give back to the community that they serve and how getting your clients involved can be a win-win for all.
Joining me to talk about it is a member of our IPC family who, for many years now, has been helping us with our trips to Honduras, Steve Fox.
Steve Fox has more than 30 years of experience as an independent financial planner. He enjoys having the opportunity to make a real difference in their clients’ lives and to help them achieve their wealth and lifestyle goals. Steve’s highly personalized approach in working with his clients ensures enduring relationships. He and his son, Mike work as a team, along with the support of Karen, Deanna and Victoria to provide a wonderful experience for their clients in Windsor, Ontario.
What do you do to give back to your community or others around the world? Do you get your clients involved? I’d love to talk with you about it over a virtual coffee! You can schedule a time with me at https://aspect.ipcc.ca/turning-the-page-podcast#grabcoffeewithchris

EP41 - How to Scale a Business: The Pike Place Story
Monday Oct 16, 2023
Monday Oct 16, 2023
One of my favorite books is “The E-Myth” by Michael Gerber. In the book Michael talks about the difference between a practitioner verses an entrepreneur. A practitioner is someone who builds a business around them. An entrepreneur builds a business around processes to deliver a quality product and experience to a customer which can be duplicated over and over.
In today’s podcast, I want to talk about the most important part of building a business – making it scalable. I have spent my career studying what makes businesses successful, I mean truly successful and there are some commonalities among all of them.
To show how to do it, I’m going to talk about one of my favorite examples: a coffee shop in Seattle which turned one location in Pike Place into 12,000 locations worldwide, a market capitalization of $128 billion dollars and a global phenomenon - Starbucks!
I’ll share with you the formula they used and how you can implement it into your business.
Are you building your business to be scalable? I’d love to talk with you about it over a virtual coffee and show you how to do it! You can schedule a time with me at https://aspect.ipcc.ca/turning-the-page-podcast#grabcoffeewithchris

Imagine a scenario where you are building a successful, growing business and then BAM – the market tanks, a client goes to the regulators and tells them you did a terrible job explaining the risks and wants all their money back.
How do you prove you did everything right? What would be your defense? What if they went further to sue you as well? What do you do?
Sounds like a nightmare, but unfortunately it happens all the time.
And in fact, the guy that might be representing that client is today’s guest, who is here to help us be prepared: Harold Geller.

Harold is a well-known financial industry commentator, a continuing education provider, particularly with respect to regulations, rules, standards and ethics.
He is a member of the OSC’s Seniors Expert Advisory Council, and a former member of the Ontario Securities Commission’s Investor Advisory Panel, a member of IIROC’s Arbitration Working Group, a member of FSRAO’s Consumer Advisory Panel, the former Chair of the OBSI’s Consumer and Investor Advisory Council. He has served for years on lawyer associations executive committees focused on Elder Law and on Life Insurance.

The other day, I was combing Netflix for something to watch and ran across the Arnold Schwarzenegger documentary. As a lark, I started to watch it. I don’t think anyone in the world doesn’t know who this man is or can’t recite his famous tagline “I’ll be back.” Who knew a boy from a small town in Austria would become a man who would win Mr. Olympia 7 times, marry a Kennedy, become a successful real estate businessman, then become a movie star selling global blockbuster after global blockbuster and then at the age of 56 ran for and became the Governor of California.
Anyone of these feats would be impressive – but all of them?
So how did he do all these amazing things? In this episode, I’ll share with you the six major takeaways I had from the documentary and how you can implement them in your own business and life.
Have you seen the documentary? I’d love to talk with you about it over a virtual coffee! Let’s chat about how we can implement these lessons into our business and life. You can schedule a time with me at https://aspect.ipcc.ca/turning-the-page-podcast#grabcoffeewithchris

I still find it amazing that business owners build this incredible business, serving clients who rely on them to create wealth for their families and yet over 80% don’t have a defined succession plan of their own.
It’s a topic that I talk to advisors about every single week!
As the average age of financial advisors continues to grow, looking at the future is even more important. How can you pass on your business, your legacy and build a life of retirement you love?
You help your clients prepare, now it’s time for you to use that leverage of a great business for your future!
This week on the podcast, we look back at some recent episodes where we explore succession planning with some amazing guests. After you hear these great clips, go back and check out the full episodes in your favorite podcast app!
Do YOU have a succession plan set up? I’d love to talk about it over a virtual coffee! Let’s chat! You can schedule a time with me at https://aspect.ipcc.ca/turning-the-page-podcast#grabcoffeewithchris
