In this episode of Turning the Page, we sit down with former British military officer and global leadership transformation expert, Jimmy Burroughes. As entrepreneurs, we often fall into the trap of over-complicating our business processes, which leads to bottlenecking, exhaustion, and stunted growth. Jimmy breaks down his proven 'Simplify to Amplify' methodology: a framework designed to help leaders cut through the noise, focus on what truly matters, and empower their teams to execute effectively. We explore why we have an innate ability to make simple things complex and how to shift your leadership mindset from 'doing it all' to becoming an effective, strategic leader.
Jimmy Burroughes is a former British Military Officer turned global leadership transformation expert, trusted by Fortune 500 companies including Bank of America, eBay, Samsung, and Walmart. He made a powerful military-to-corporate transition, commanding 110 in European and Middle East operations before helping executives worldwide cut through complexity. He is the creator of the "Simplify to Amplify" methodology and host of The High Performance Leader Podcast (Top 10% globally). Jimmy helps exhausted executives escape reactive leadership through radical simplification — helping them reclaim 10+ hours per week while building teams that perform without constant oversight. He is the author of two books: Beat Burnout – Ignite Performance and Escape the Multitasking Trap.

EP 107: Building a Business Through Acquisitions with Chris Fox
Monday May 11, 2026

When we talk about succession planning, we often talk about advisors who are retiring or those that are planning on stepping away from their business. But on the other side of that fence are those that are GROWING their business - those that see the opportunity to continue to service those clients when advisors decide it’s time for a change in their life.
One advisor at IPC, Chris Fox, has been building his business through acquiring other advisors’ books as they are retiring. He has seen how valuable it can be to be a rock to clients during a transition and build a long-term relationship with those clients.
Today, Chris is here to talk about how he’s building his business and how other advisors looking to grow can also take advantage of the amazing opportunities that are out there right now.
Chris Fox is the principal of Fox Financial in Edmonton, Alberta. Chris has been in the financial services industry since 1998, when he joined his father in the business. With over 25 years of experience guiding Canadian families and business owners, he specializes in creating personalized wealth management, retirement, and estate strategies that balance long-term growth with financial peace of mind.

One of the things I'm most proud of is when we built IPC Wealth, our main focus was on culture.
Culture is one of those things that is hard to define, but you know it when you see it and FEEL it. In today’s show, I’m going to share the concept of culture in building a business, why it’s so important to be purposeful about the culture that you want to develop and why it becomes your competitive advantage.
Culture isn’t just a backdrop to your work. It’s the heartbeat of your organization. It’s the energy that fills the air when your team comes together. It’s the reason people show up not just to earn a paycheck, but to be part of something meaningful.
And here’s the truth: you already have a culture. The question is: is it the one you want? Or is it the one you’ve settled for?

No matter where you turn these days, A.I. is all the rage. The finance world is no different.
In our industry, relationships are what matter most. A.I. can be a tool to help us spend more time building those relationships, which is where your growth happens. You probably have tried ChatGPT or something similar in your business. But how do we really use the tools that are out there? How can advisors use technology and use these tools to help them deliver a great client experience? What is truly possible with A.I. tools today?
Joining me to talk about that today is John Connell. John is the founder and CEO of Focal, an AI-powered platform for financial advisors. Trusted by leading firms across North America, Focal goes beyond simple note-taking to automate tasks, streamline client conversations, and boost advisor productivity—helping firms scale without increasing headcount.

Many years ago (not that many, I’m still a young lad!), I took a training course that, to this day, has changed my life. I still think about it and use the tools that have shaped me as a leader: the Dale Carnegie Communication training program. “How to Win Friends and Influence People” is, of course, one of the must-read books for anyone in business. Believe it or not – I have read this book 9 times and still have no friends!
But the organization goes well beyond the books. And their training programs are still going strong today!
As technology continues to take over our lives and how we communicate with our team members, our clients and our friends and family, I thought it might be a good time to go back to the basics. We have all these great tools to connect, but how we connect with people on a human level is something we could always use a refresher on. As tech tools and AI take over the world, the ability to connect with someone one-on-one matters more than ever today.
Today’s guest is Amy Blake. Amy is the Vice President of Operations at Dale Carnegie (Ontario & Maritimes Franchise). Amy’s Dale Carnegie career spans over 28 years, helping organizations build empowering leaders. Amy designs and delivers engaging programs—both virtual and in-person—that equip leaders at all levels with the skills, insights, and confidence to succeed.

Before you recommend a service, a restaurant, a hotel, a professional to someone you know, what has to happen before you’d be willing to do that? I bet they have to leave you saying WOW! They have to do something amazing - and that amazing thing usually isn’t anything big. It’s a small gesture or moment that shows you that they’re paying attention and know you. It’s the feeling they leave you when you walk away. When a business is able to do that, you want to tell everyone all about it!
Today, I'm going to dive into the art and science of creating a great client experience that’s so good that you don't just remember them, you tell everything about them. Experiences that are so good that you go on and make sure people know that these exist.
Because actually, you would feel bad if you didn't tell people about these great experiences you had.
THAT is what really separates all the great businesses.

For many advisors, growth is usually through one path: gathering assets one client at a time. But increasingly, the fastest—and often smartest—path to scale is through acquisition: buying retiring advisors’ practices. As many advisors across Canada are on the verge of retirement, if you’re looking to grow your business, this is a great time to take advantage of this opportunity.
Advisors weren’t trained to think like buyers. Acquisitions raise real questions—about valuation, cash flow, risk, and financing. So how do you go down this path?
My guest today, Tom de Larzac, helps advisors every day make thai happen. He’s worked across the financial industry focusing on cash-flow-based lending for specialty businesses, with deep experience in valuations, acquisitions, and growth financing. He’s worked with business owners and brands across multiple industries, helping them think strategically about capital—not just as funding, but as a tool for long-term growth.
Tom is part of Care Lending Group, a privately held Canadian financing firm that specializes in tailored lending solutions for niche industries—including wealth management. Within their advisory division, Care Lending Group works closely with independent advisors to support acquisition, succession, and enterprise-value growth strategies.
With an initial portfolio exceeding $350 million and a growing national client base, Care Lending Group is known for combining deep industry expertise with a relationship-driven approach. Unlike traditional lenders, CLG focuses on understanding each client’s unique business model and delivering customized financing solutions that align with long-term goals, not one-size-fits-all lending.
Care Lending Group has become a partner with Investment Planning Counsel to help advisors in the IPC Pinnacle program grow their business through acquisitions as advisors across Canada continue to retire.

There is a shift happening in wealth. Recently at one of our seminars, a speaker asked “Who do you think controls the decision making on most of the personal wealth in North America right now?” The answer: Women aged 45-55. Why? Because they make decisions for their kids and their parents as well as their own family.
Within a generation or two, we’ve seen this major shift in who makes decisions when it comes to wealth management. There are so many under-served segments of our community that are becoming major decision makers: women, younger generations and secondary decision-makers in client families.
How do you engage these growing demographics and how do you engage in this traditionally underserved and somewhat untapped market?
Marissa Teeter is a sought-after business advisor, executive coach and keynote speaker/moderator with a solid track record and impressive results as a senior wealth executive and business leader. She has both led and coached leaders who own/run multi-million and multi-billion-dollar enterprises.
Marissa is an exceptional communicator and facilitator and has over 20 years of business development, wealth management and executive leadership under her belt. She has held corporate executive roles, helped build and run a boutique wealth management firm, consulted Fortune 500 companies, and helped fuel a handful of start-up companies along the way.
